Entrance

Enter Blackrock Mountain from Searing Gorge or Burning Steppes and take the upper path rather than the chains down to the Depths; the Blackrock Spire portal is at the top. Lower and Upper Blackrock Spire share this portal, and Vaelan for the key quest stands just inside.

Overview

Lower Blackrock Spire is the bottom half of the fortress Rend Blackhand’s Dark Horde built on top of Blackrock Mountain. Orcs, trolls and ogres fill its halls, caves and spider tunnels, and the final boss, Overlord Wyrmthalak, commands the Bloodaxe forces at its heart.

It is a five-player dungeon aimed at levels 55–60 and one of the busiest in the endgame: it holds a lot of pre-raid gear, it is where the Upper Spire key quest is completed, and it drops the note that begins the attunement to Blackwing Lair.

Attunement

Lower Blackrock Spire itself needs no key. The Upper Spire does: kill Omokk, Voone and Wyrmthalak here for their gemstones and turn them in to Vaelan together with the Unadorned Seal of Ascension.

Based on Classic Era; details may differ in WoW Forever and will be checked after launch.

  1. 1

    Highlord Omokk

Spirestone ogre king at the top of the first ogre area. Knock Away and a frenzy; fight him away from the ledge so nobody is thrown off. Drops one of the three gemstones for the key.

    Notable loot
    • Gemstone of Spirestone
    • Omokk's Head
    • Omokk's Girth Restrainer
    • Slamshot Shoulders
  2. 2

    Shadow Hunter Vosh'gajin

Smolderthorn troll shaman in the troll caves. Hex and Curse of Blood — decurse and have a dispeller ready.

    Notable loot
    • Vosh'gajin's Snakestone
    • Vosh'gajin's Strand
  3. 3

    War Master Voone

Troll warlord in Tazz'Alaor. Throws axes, Snap Kick and Cleave; tank him facing away from the group. Drops the Smolderthorn gemstone.

    Notable loot
    • Gemstone of Smolderthorn
    • Voone's Vice Grips
    • Voone's Twitchbow
  4. 4

    Mother Smolderweb

    Notable loot
    • Smolderweb Carrier
    • Funeral Cuffs
    • Venomspitter
  5. 5

    Urok Doomhowl

Optional ogre boss called down at his tribute pile; waves of ogre adds arrive before he joins in. Bring crowd control and a fresh group.

  6. 6

    Quartermaster Zigris

Orc quartermaster in the storeroom area. Shoots and drinks potions to heal — keep him in melee and interrupt where possible.

  7. 7

    Halycon

Great worg mother in her den. Rend and Thrash; a plain tank-and-spank. Gizrul the Slavener comes after her once she dies.

    Notable loot
    • Halycon's Muzzle
    • Halycon's Spiked Collar
  8. 8

    Gizrul the Slavener

Worg who charges in after Halycon falls. Fatal Bite and a frenzy — keep the tank topped up and finish him quickly.

  9. 9

    Overlord Wyrmthalak

Final boss of the Lower Spire. Around half health he summons Bloodaxe reinforcements, so save crowd control for that moment. Drops the last gemstone for the key.

    Notable loot
    • Gemstone of Bloodaxe
    • Wyrmthalak's Shackles

Based on Classic Era; details may differ in WoW Forever and will be checked after launch.

Map from the game files (Classic layout). Tap to open it full size.

  • Kill Scarshield Quartermasters on the way: they drop General Drakkisath's Command, which starts the Blackwing Lair attunement.
  • Lower Spire is long; many groups split it into the ogre half (Omokk) and the orc half (Wyrmthalak).
  • Collect the three gemstones in the same run if anyone in the group still needs the Upper Spire key.
  • Watch out for the many ledges in the Spire — knockbacks can send you to your death.
